If you are deeply in debt, it is unlikely that you have a positive net value, which means it is unlikely that you will have to pay taxes on your reduced debt. The law requires that financial institutions disclose canceled debts of $600 or more (the forgiven amount during the transactions of the establishment) to the IRS.
